It’s not the kind of book I read for the anbe itself, it’s the book I read for the ideas of the characters. My library Help Advanced Book Search. McCaffery isn’t going to tell us explicitly. I agree with most that this book isn’t so much about Damia as it is about Afra.

My re read now showed me just how much I missed or forgot. Assigned to serve the farthest human colonized world from Earth, Damia leads a lonely existence until she telepathically connects with an alien presence in another galaxy—a potential threat not only to Damia, but to the love Afra wants to share with her This one does not disappoint.

I tried to keep an open mind about it, but Afra had taken care of Damia like a father in the beginning and then they became lovers And, actually, the worldbuilding was good. What does it mean that mercurial Damia didn’t shield when she was with her first lover, Amer?

I read this when it was first published, years ago. Her older brother and sister share a very tight bond, often completely excluding Damia from their games and life.
Aug 22, Ed Avern rated it it was ok. The whole thing takes place in the well run future, and the problem with the well run future is that there’s really very little to sort out. Her two older siblings had this weird sibling bond and they tended to leave her out of their games. Damia just gets a bit of a stern word from Afra But not without casualties. I felt like I was missing most things to fill in the gaps and was winging a fair bit to try and piece the story together.
When she comes of age, Damia learns that a Prime of her capabilities and temperament has no time for love. Boring as only McCaffrey can manage. She died at the age of 85, after suffering a massive stroke on 21 November Views Read Edit View history.
By the time the three children of her marriage were comfortably in school most of the day, she had already achieved enough success with short stories to devote full time to writing.

Being highly talented, she learns early Damia is the middle child of the Rowan and Jeff Raven. Such an excellent First Contact tale! I had a hard time liking Damia. Afra has always loved her, since the day she was born, but he has kept his distance.
