Better World Books Condition: Jun 02, Corin Wenger rated it it was amazing. A generous selection of Bukowski’s work, edited by his long-time editor John Martin. Usually the protagonist’s relationship to women, once you get over the initial revulsion you may have toward someone with such evident misogyny, is usually hilarious and at the end is poignant. If you would like to sample Bukowski over the thirty years or so of his career, this would be a good place to start.

His poems are varied, some are simple and conversational others are the most exquisite imagery pieces. They seemed very strange, they laughed and talked and seemed happy. Yet, Bukowski is strangely sensitive and fragile in an almost childlike way. Things that we are accustomed to hear about in flowery, lyrical prose are treated mockingly, such as sex, while real emotions and traumatic events he conveys without a language for feelings, simply describing actions that show the characters’ states of mind.
