I have no idea what I read. Will this book pick up? There’s also an ungodly amount going on in the background, and many readers will have a tough time appreciating the world events playing outside the windows of the main plot when they’re struggling to understand all the references Eco drops that are essential to the main plot itself. In this way the conspiracy theory provided is a plot device, rather than an earnest proposition.

Eso los masculinos, claro. But what we have here is a thriller probably meant almost exclusively for those with a steady background in occult sciences and European religio-mythical lore.

Hundreds and hundreds of pages, so many facts an dates and names with periodic untranslated phrases in Latin and French, so much that I would sometimes grow glassy eyed while reding and facts seemed the blur together.
It’s clear that Echo is a scholar, because the amount of research that had to have gone into this book boggles the mind. Several cultures, science, centuries of world events and conspiracy theories collide into a whacko’s wet dream in Foucault’s Foucaul. Let me say that again I’ll start with the positive, it was well-researched. But for now, I turn to easier yarns.

They use this program to create the “connections” which inspire their Plan.
Conceptually, this book is fascinating, but the execution was wanting; again, this may be because Eco was trying to tell a different story than I wanted to read. The fuocault novel is full of esoteric references to Kabbalahalchemyand conspiracy theory —so many that critic and novelist Anthony Burgess suggested that it needed an index.
It is unclear by this point how reliable a narrator Casaubon has been, and to what extent he has been inventing, or deceived by, conspiracy theories.
